Cycle I The Temple: history of the future Chapter I Promising the future (Greece, IV century B.C., the popularly known Apollo-Phoebus temple near the Aegean Sea coast) The priest was sitting in a grove behind the temple on a fallen tree trunk overgrown with lichens. It was quiet here and he sat in solitude. Birds were twittering around him in the trees casting lacy shadows on the ground. But the priest noticed none of this. A white tunic with the shadows of spring gliding over it, came down to his knees. The young face of the priest seemed impassive. His hard lips were compressed, eyes shut, and back as straight as a pole planted upright in the ground. His black curls falling to the shoulders showed sporadic streaks of grey… Despite his thirty-six years Zaron had already been the senior priest of the Apollo temple for several years, even though priests usually attain that position only at a much more advanced age. It was not for nothing that his name meant “golden” or “shining” and that he had been to Egypt to train with the Amon priests and receive the same education as the great Pythagoras did in his time. His spirit was soaring high… The priest knew how unpredictable the unknown God’s ceaseless motion and eternal game could be and what surprising and queer mysteries may interfere with this game, triggering still queerer happenings. The priest’s mind was mature and worldly-wise, but his heart was quite young. The priest’s motionlessness concealed now a deep melancholy. He remembered the events long bygone, which clearly, like in real life, now rose up and passed through his mind, along with happenings of three days ago. * * * … The prophet priestess lay motionless on a marble bed in an underground room of the temple. Her fine dark hair ran over her white tunic. Her very youthful face was swarthy and the large dark eyes, the lakes of melancholy, exuded such profound sadness that nothing in the world, it seemed, could assuage it. The girl’s face had grown thin and pallid to a tinge of blue, while her gaze, directed to the sky, seemed abstracted and impassive. The kneeling man in the priest’s robe by her bedside looked gravely alarmed, but attempted futilely to conceal this. He knew perfectly well the cause of that sadness. Three days previously, a stranger had exploited an oversight of junior priests and penetrated the temple, stealing from it the Rain Stone, a sacred treasure possessing an incredible magic power and able to bless soil with rain and ample crops. Young Diotima had fallen asleep after the festival of Dionysus, exhausted by the celebration and many prophecies she had made. By falling asleep in the temple gallery near the amphora containing the Stone she was supposed to guard, she gave the thief an opportunity to take the miraculous object. The priest was wondering why the thief had done that. He couldn’t have known the real power of the Stone nor that it could be used as a Key to other realities. Nobody except the priests knew this. Only a fool could have committed such sacrilege, and he definitely was one. Being conspicuously young, he was spotted by a temple worker. Escaping, he very nearly broke his neck climbing down the wall. The priest shook his head: “Who is he?” The fool’s mistake was really grievous. Diotima, the priestess of the temple who wielded the secret magic of the Stone and had the outstanding gift of prophecy, was now dying of sorrow, drawing into herself and declining to see anybody except the Senior priest. For three days now she has refused to take food or rise from her marble bed. Zaron could not make her change her decision. The woman he loved with all his heart succumbed neither to his magic power nor desire to help. Lifting carefully her head, he brought a cup of water to her mouth. She drank off a little, which did not fortify her at all. She only looked at him in silence. Some dejection showed in her stare. Now she looked as if from a distance… The priest knew what it meant but couldn’t give up and fought on. Leaning over her, he took both her hands in his. “Cheer up, Diotima! Maybe, the Stone will be recovered! You’re still strong enough. Don’t go yet. You are worth of being the Senior priestess of the temple,” the priest’s dark eyes glowed with excitement and pain. “I don’t want you to leave us, Dio,” he said and broke off because Diotima was silent. But then her lips quivered and she uttered almost inaudibly: “I go, Zaron. Don’t grieve over this. This ought to have happened…” The priest lowered her hands as if suddenly he got scared. Her hands were becoming already cool… Gazing into her eyes, he said: “We shall overcome Fate, Diotima! If you wish, I will punish the one who made you suffer! He will be found and won’t avoid penalty…” he took Diotima’s hand again and a glimmer of hope flared up in his eyes. But the priestess was looking at him steadily as if piercing with her gaze. The priest felt the inevitability of what was happening. “Why did it happen, Dio? You’re not guilty of anything before gods. Tell me, who is that thief and why did he act so? After all, the Rain Stone can’t be destroyed or sold, which means that the man was just crazy or damned from birth!” Diotima was still looking somewhere into the distance: “I can see him… He’s young. It didn’t even occur to him to do any harm. He knows still so little and his Fate is not yet weighed on the scale. And in my vision…” the priestess fell silent and a mysterious smile touched her lips. “What was there in your vision, Diotima?” the priest bent over her still lower. “He didn’t wake me up,” whispered Diotima bitterly. “If he did, everything would work out differently. But he fled in confusion because he touched the force of the Stone. He didn’t know how to cope with that…” The priestess repeated as if she wished her interlocutor would get the message more fully: “He touched the force of the Stone, Zaron…” “How on earth can it be?! He is not initiated. And he can’t have participated even in commonly accessible mysteries. He can’t have known how to handle the Stone!” “This knowledge came to him because he was innocent and charmed by the beauty of the world. The Stone itself revealed its mystery to him and granted him an extraordinary life. Only this time this life will be quite short. I see this. But later, in future realities…” the priestess’s voice was dying away. The priest interrupted her: “I don’t doubt that his life will be short! He committed sacrilege! You’re dying because of him, Diotima!” “The stone’s shine has entered another dimension. I must follow it because the years of associating with the Stone have changed my body and filled it with light,” a smile showed through the depth of Diotima’s eyes as if she again caught sight of something the priest could hardly perceive. “But part of the Stone entered this youth, as much as he could take in. It’s none of his fault. Spare him. Let him go his way and some day…” the priestess fell silent. The priest’s hand holding hers unclasped slowly. Zaron lowered his head and leaned silently against the edge of the stone bed… * Dionysian feasts – farmers’ celebrations in Ancient Greece in honour of God Dionysus. This was accompanied by carnival rites, singing and dancing. Dionysian celebrations were held twice a year, in spring and autumn. * * * “O Dio, your presence made everything around you sacred!” the priest rose up and angrily marched off toward a glade in the grove where a white marble altar stood under the trees. Here on holidays sacrificial animals with gilded horns were presented to Zeus and during Dionysian celebrations fruits and other produce were burned on the altar to render the year happy and fertile. On such days peasants came here and the glade became noisy. But now nobody was in sight here. The grove was empty for access to it had been holily banned for strangers except on festive days. The priest silently put the dry chips, twigs and cypress leaves on the altar, doing it so adroitly and expertly that they caught fire quickly the moment he dropped a spark on them from his fire striker. The altar fire burned cracking slightly, almost without smoke. The priest looked at it for some time, cutting off irrelevant thoughts and breathing in the resinous aroma. He wanted to address Zeus Pantocrator, but instead addressed somehow Phoebus, the Sun God: “O Phoebus, I wish to see the face of the desperado who dared to penetrate the temple!” The smoothly burning fire suddenly soared up over the altar in pure golden flames and the priest closed his eyes. He visualized a youth’s face, as if emerging from the shine. The stranger’s fair hair fell on his shoulders and his eyes were naively wide open like they asked for something. Compared to Zaron, that man was a mere child. It seemed it would be easy to penetrate the mystery of those eyes and lips open in a surprise and lightly touched by a smile, both trusting and questioning. It was not at all what the priest expected. He was so amazed there was no room left in his soul for anger. In his vision the stranger’s face flared up again, glistened with a soft light and disappeared. Zaron concentrated, but for the first time since he started practicing visions he failed to lift the veil from the further course of events, hard as he tried to do this... * * * Putting out the altar fire and thanking Phoebus, Zaron headed from the glade toward the temple. Suddenly, sobs gripped him like a torrent of sharp pain and made him kneel down in the shade of the trees. He cried silently for a while, but soon calmed down and became quiet turning up his face to the sky. His eyes were closed. It looked like he was harking to something. Deep within him rose and grew a sound of music, a finest ring of a string. The dark space before his closed eyelids began to revolve smoothly, filling with endless stars from the divine infinity of the Universe. A blue flower, pure like sapphire, slowly emerged and stopped motionless before Zaron’s eyes. A woman’s voice came from the infinite sky. It was the voice of somebody whose bulk, strewn with flowers, had been devoured two days ago by fire which reduced it to ashes carried away by the river: “This flower will open up before you when you come into a new river of Life and start creating new realities! I’ll give you a new life, my dear!...” The priest heard a deep and sonorous passage of harp strings that melted in space, following which the blue flower vanished in the sky that continued to turn, splashing the priest with golden and silver streaks of light. After that the divine scene dimmed in the dusk of his vision and he departed from the internal galaxy with his eyes open and giving a deep sigh. He was so staggered he made an effort to raise himself. Finally, he got up and moved unhurriedly toward the temple. “She called me “my dear” – what could it mean? I would never dare to touch a virgin priestess. Her destiny and fate were to prophesy for people and preserve the Stone, the mysterious Rain Stone from Atlantis. But I truly loved her and still love… What did she mean by the “new life”?” Zaron had now more questions than answers to them. As he walked on, his heart thumped ever more violently and began aching with anxiety. The walls of the temple drew closer and closer. He stopped abruptly. “I have never touched her, but I always felt she loves me. And now she is gone! How I wish I could kneel down before her though I don’t know what my fault is! O Phoebus, it’s not fair! Something is wrong with everything happening in the temple. Everything has to be different!” His thoughts, like a bright light suddenly illuminated the depths of his body and soul. He looked at everything around him with new eyes. Everything was exactly the same as it used to be. He realized, however, that something had to be changed. And it will be he who will change it. He must find how to make that change. Maybe, he will need to make a journey for this purpose. “I don’t wish to stay in the temple any more!” his whisper shook all his body, as if it were a clap of thunder. Entering the temple, he lay down on the bed in a solitary room and, utterly exhausted, sank into sleep. But even in his sleep that question, harassing and disquieting, clamored for an answer. “Who was he, after all?” * * * Zaron could not penetrate the veil of events probably because it was not God’s will. However, the memory of the temple secretly retained many images of what had occurred...

An unexpected guest Just sea alone you well kenned, Unfailing sail was your true friend. You got confused, forgot your duty, And wandered in the maze of beauty. The stranger who had penetrated the temple was so young that even its steps were surprised at his age. But then, he didn’t use them, choosing to climb up the tree growing by the wall, whereupon he bent the bough and, clinging to it, scrambled to the parapet surrounding the roof. It was not an easy trick to perform, but the thin and agile stranger coped with it fine. As he was crawling over the bough his sandals on long latchets dangled on his wrist… Finding himself on the parapet, he stopped still, cautiously looked around, and then slid down without a sound onto the roof. The boy who got into the temple so recklessly was seventeen at the most. Perhaps he was aware of the danger facing a violator of the strict ban, but the sense of own daring intoxicated him and quickened his heart beat. He wanted to see the beautiful priestess, the divine prophetess Diotima, inaccessible to anybody since her chastity was a guarantee of the gods’ patronage of the temple and land it stood on. Only pure and virgin priestess could take the Rain Stone which was now shining in her hands, blessing this wonderful world to bloom. The girl and the Stone could only be seen at Dionysian celebrations, sacred and joyous feasts in honour of the awakening of Nature and the earth’s gifts when dancing and singing gladdened the people and amused the gods. It would not have occurred to the boy to undertake an adventure if previously he had not attended the temple feast. And if his master, the captain of a small commercial vessel, had not given him a few days’ leave for “free floating” he would not have ended up in those parts altogether. Given that the spring Dionysian celebrations were nearing, the captain let the sailors, including our adventurer, go to their families for merry-making. * * * The boy froze, enchanted, at the edge of the parapet. Two steps away from him the beautiful Diotima lay asleep, wrapped up in an airy blue tunic. Her chestnut hair fell over her shoulders in a cascade of curls, her full eyelashes closed in sleep. Her tunic only partially concealed her sylphlike body. The girl’s elegant breast rose and fell delicately, and a sunbeam rested on her cheek… Oh if only she would awaken and he could look once again into her eyes, which were as blue as a dark sapphire and as full of starlight as the sky at night! Their eyes had met only once and just for an instant while he was following her in a bustling crowd. That was absolutely unforgettable… It seemed to him that she was looking from afar and the hum of the crowd did not concern her at all. Oh, if only she would look at him again and speak just one word to him. That would make him the happiest and most fortunate of mortals!.. He hadn’t yet known what love is and could only guess what enjoyment it may bring… He felt his knees tremble and all his body shiver as if pierced by a gleaming light. The amazed temple continued watching and listening… The stranger shifted his enchanted eyes to the snow-white amphora on the tripod at the sleeping prophetess and suddenly became quiet, remembering that that amphora contained the mysterious thing, the Rain Stone. Otherwise why should the priestess be here, as if guarding the sacred treasure? * * * The boy was not a madman at all. He was just bewitched by the quiet of the temple. It was as if in those minutes he was beyond time. He slowly bent over the amphora… The clear, slightly quivering mirror of the water showed his face with almond-shaped glistening grey eyes full of curiosity. The face seemed to be framed by soft fair hair scattered over the shoulders. The comer smiled and his double in the amphora did the same. After that the young stranger directed his eyes to the Stone lying on the bottom. It was a huge amber the size of a child’s head. The golden mass of the amber was pierced by the rays of the sun and it seemed that the golden threads trembled in the crystal clear water. The sight was so beautiful the stranger could not take his eyes off it, forgetting altogether that he could be found and caught in this state. The Stone hypnotized him by its secret life. “What is the Stone’s secret? Why is it worshipped by priests and priestesses and why do they guard it so carefully?” the boy felt like somebody in a fairytale. He slowly inserted his hand into the water, took out the Stone and started to scrutinize it. At that moment he looked at the sleeping priestess: “I’ll just peep at the Stone, dearest… Just peep…” He approached the parapet and began again to examine the Stone, putting it some distance away at an arm’s length. The warm amber mysteriously glistened with golden light on his palm and there was still not a soul around…. The stranger became silent, inwardly shivering in anticipation of something unknown…. Suddenly he sensed something. The space around him seemed to have broken into a song, though it was rather a sound of silence than normal music. He felt he was losing his body. But somehow it didn’t scare him at all. A very queer feeling, close to rest and bliss, gripped him as if he was not only here on the roof of the temple, but also was in touch with the trees around him, with the air that began to shine, and with the soul of the beautiful priestess lying serenely asleep… Torrents of mysterious warmth assailed the stranger as if an unknown God embraced him on a sudden and enwrapped in a very thin and impalpable veil… With a sigh the boy kneeled down at the sleeping priestess and, slowly leaning over her, put his lips to her tunic. She sighed in sleep but didn’t wake up, continuing to lie like a magnificent enchanted goddess. Minutes of blissful observation passed, the minutes ignored by the comer for the space around him kept filling with light rendering him insensible to the passage of time. The waves of light filled all the surrounding space… The mysterious and charming Present displayed its strength and made the daring fellow forget everything, including himself. He had become so unlimited and unrestricted at these wonderful moments that he would be unable to stir. He was free and he was an epitome of bliss… “So that’s what the secret of the Stone is…” he heard a distant and almost inaudible voice arising from the depth of his mind. Suddenly, the Stone became encircled by strong and smooth waves of light coming away from the centre like circles on a water surface. The boy’s body fluttered. He didn’t understand what was happening. The white and golden light seemed to pierce him, flowing through his skin pores and setting fire to something within him, which burned without hurting… For a few moments the comer lost the ability to see the Stone and even his hands… Amazed, he tried to rise from the knees, but couldn’t do that. A minute later the shining waned softly and smoothly. The boy’s hands were empty. He cried out. Stunned, he scrutinized his empty hands which had held for a moment (or was it an eternity?) that fine Stone… But the Stone was gone. Taken aback, the stranger slowly rose up, obviously not believing his eyes. The space still continued to issue that mysterious music. The boy staggered as if he had partaken of the drink prohibited by Gods. He felt like he was not on the solid ground but in a strange mesmerized world between the realities and sleep. But the understanding of the catastrophe gradually reached his mind. His eyes opened widely and he stood stock still in a fright. At this moment the priestess sighed and stirred, which brought him back to his senses and made him look around apprehensively. Suddenly he heard the steps. An attendant’s head emerged from the hatch in the roof. Something had alarmed him, probably, the boy’s shouting. The attendant and the boy stared at each other in amazement. Staggering, the stranger rushed toward the parapet taking no notice of anything on his way, and rolled head over heels down from the tree miraculously not breaking his neck. The attendant yelled shrilly from above: “Thief in temple! Stop thief! Chase him!” The priestess woke up and looked at him in terror with widely open blue eyes. Just a minute later, roughly a dozen hefty men, junior priests and guards, ran out of the temple basement. They all rushed after the fugitive who, luckily for him, disappeared in the grove. His legs did not carry him well. He slipped and fell on the gnarled roots of the first trees that came his way. The ground seemed to be shivering with the stomp of the chasers, the death was nearing the distressed fugitive… * * * … Now it was not a brave hero seeking the heroics, but a child lying under the tree, who was covering his head with hands in terror that seized him once he performed what he did. The chase was nearing. The fugitive pressed himself to the ground, chilled with horror. He wouldn’t raise his hand to defend himself if the priests and guards seized him. But nobody noticed him. The hum of the crowd was beginning to wane. A minute later the chasers’ clatter died away in the distance on the other edge of the grove. The boy jumped up and rushed away, for all he was worth, like an arrow released from a bow. Actually, he didn’t think of anything before he had covered the first several miles, leaving far behind the temple and, what he believed, all the happenings associated with it… It seemed to him involuntarily that in the distance, on the obscure horizon, the deities of vengeance were rising like grim stars, the merciless Erinnias, in order to punish him cruelly for his unthinkable daring… Collapsing under a bush, he burst into tears.

A question to obscurity A service at the temple had always been for Zaron a magic performance bringing him strength and renovation. It was a divine ecstasy granted by Phoebus. Previously, he had never wished anything else for himself and was absolutely happy, but after the priestess’s departure he stopped feeling as inspired as before, clearly realizing that something irreparable had occurred at the temple which had always been his home. Nobody among the people knew that the Rain Stone had gone. The disaster was kept strictly secret. However, the queer thing was that even though the Stone had disappeared, the services held at the temple continued to produce the same effect on the local nature. The rains fell as before and the sky was just as benevolent to the land in the middle of which the temple stood. Just as a wish for this arose, the clear azure darkened, a wind brought clouds and a warm rain poured down on the thirsty ground, fetching rest and joy for all. However, Zaron was not surprised at this… All other inhabitants of the temple were gravely depressed by what had happened and did not believe that following the Stone’s disappearance the peace and wellbeing on their land would prevail for long. Seeing the somber frame of mind of all those informed about the loss of the Stone, Zaron decided to find the culprit at any cost and to do unto him as the law prescribed: “He who violated the peaceful life of these people must be executed. Executed by me for he was the cause of the priestess’s death in the prime of her life and full of promise.” Zaron felt empty and hurt. He had long forgotten the taste of a real joy. He impassively got ready for the journey, making all the necessary arrangements and issuing orders for all his matters. But despite the decision he had made he felt doubts in his mind: “I feel that the Stone is not here, in our world, any more. But I must find the culprit. How did he dare to touch the Stone?! What could he learn from it if he is only an uninitiated creature and a veritable fool at that?… I want to get his answer!” He didn’t know how long he would be away, but supposed for no less than a month. In the meantime, one of the junior priests, an active fellow and not devoid of magic skills, would serve at the temple... * * * On a quiet summer day, in no way different from others, Zaron left the temple yard on horseback. The vicinity seemed quite deserted. None of the strangers saw the rider’s departure. This was the priest’s special feature, when necessary, he could enter any place practically unnoticed. He was wearing a traveler’s dress which made him undistinguishable from hundreds of other travelers in the web of sun-scorched roads.

Catharsis … The priest has followed the tracks of the Stone thief for now the third day. He felt that the thief was near. He is here, in Ephesus, where he may have ended up in a futile attempt to escape the retribution. The unfailing intuition told Zaron that he was on the right track. “To be sure, the truth will out,” thought the priest as a malicious smirk split his face. Now an encounter with the daring fool who had encroached on the shrine treasure was only a matter of time. Zaron roamed the town, heeding his intuition – would some signal turn up that would bring him over straight to the thief. Finally, passing by an entry into a narrow lane he felt an urge to turn into it… This appeared to be a poor place, piled up with rotting vegetables scattered on the roadside, permeated with the stench of fish overdone in cheap oil. Closer to the end of the lane was a low dirty inn, a two-storey affair with a basement where visitors gathered to have a drink of wine and exchange the news. “Easy to imagine what dwelling cubicles are here. A mob’s meeting place,” the priest winced, swung open the loudly creaking door, and entered the dark room. However, it was thickly dark only to those entering it from the street. Within a minute the priest adapted himself to the darkness. His eyes took in a few long wooden tables round which a motley assemblage of people sat talking, which made the room a very noisy place. Somebody was playing the cithara. Here were fishermen, street hawkers, several herdsmen and a small group of people of an obscure occupation, who are regular frequenters of such locations. Nobody paid any heed at all to the priest, clad in a plain traveler’s dress. Asking the host for a jug of sour wine and a hunk of bread, the traveler settled himself at a vacant table and surveyed the place. In the semidarkness of the room lit only by bundles of long splinters of burning resinous softwood, his eyes fell on a pale face of a young tramp whose occupations were hard to determine and who seemed to be deep in thought without looking at anybody. The young man stared dejectedly into his mug from which, now and again, he sipped the weak wine, taking from the plate in front of him one small fried fish after another. He looked like one heavily depressed by something. “That’s him!” the priest became inwardly alert on recognizing the face he had seen several weeks previously in his vision. * * * The Stone thief rose and headed for the exit. Once the door was shut after him, his pursuer also got up and went outside. He followed the tramp who was walking some ten steps in front of him. Now, by the light, it could be seen that the pursuer was very young, just a boy of eighteen or so. Thin and lanky, with blond hair hanging in loose disarray over the shoulders. Poorly clad in an old, much-mended tunic that had once been some shade of blue and had definitely seen better days. Barefooted. The gait is light like a dancer's one, as if the earth’s gravity was none of his concerns… The priest watched his back as the young man suddenly turned. His bright grayish blue eyes glistened, getting instantly a steely hue. From his vision the priest knew how that man’s face would look. But now, by the light of day he was surprised not to find a single trace of fault in that face. Unfailingly testifying to this were the fine clear cut features, something the priest knew all about. Physiognomy was one of the sciences in which he succeeded especially well. Obviously, the young man got scared. Detecting a keen attention for himself he deemed it right to take to heels, speeding along the lane as fast as his legs could carry him. He must have seen something really dreadful in the priest’s face. The priest did not chase him, as he knew that the bird had already been trapped, and would get entangled in the magic net woven for him in recent days. Nothing was left for him but to wait till the stranger would himself come to him. “And will take the punishment he deserves. How very odd that such a child appeared to be the cause of our troubles!” * * * In the evening of the same day the young man whose thoughts were still on the displeasing encounter at the inn, decided to leave Ephesus urgently. But for the queer stranger, whose stare had literally scorched his back, the boy would have stayed in the city for another day or two as the small merchant ship on which he had sailed as a sailor along the Aegean Sea was now anchored at the haven awaiting a delivery of new goods. Since there was a temporary lull in work, the master let him take a short leave. In the mountains not far away lived the boy’s mother whom he visited first of all, subsequently heading for his friends in Ephesus. But the town’s bustle didn’t gladden his eyes any more. Overall, ever since the moment he had inadvertently taken the Rain Stone, he often had a fit of depression. He felt some danger hanging over him as if an invisible shadow pursued him all the time… His friends didn’t know about his experience and all that had happened to him back then on the roof of the temple. He kept all this strictly secret. Even his mother, the closest human being for him in the entire world, had no idea what depressed her son. And now, in the onset of dusk, he was hurrying to the outskirts of the town, trying hard to return as soon as possible to his ship in the haven. There, at least, he would feel himself relatively safe. Sure enough, the young sailor could not imagine that the decision to leave Ephesus was not his own. Now, the intricate magic labyrinth woven by the priest was leading him straight into his chaser’s hands. Each step was bringing him closer and closer to the trap… It’s getting dark fast in warm countries. So, when the fugitive reached the wasteland on the western outskirt of the town, the surroundings could be only seen by the light of the moon and stars. There was perfect calm and no wind; all had long been asleep in the neighboring lanes. The traveler felt like somebody all by himself in the universe. An impervious thick shadow lay on the far edge of the wasteland, near the entry to a dark lane. In a complete silence and quiet the young traveler crossed half the wasteland. Though sick at heart, he didn’t fear the road at night. Suddenly the silence broke into a confusion of sounds accompanied by what looked like surrealism: a rider on a huge black horse rushed from the darkness out of the last lane and into the wasteland. The rattling hoofs were carrying him to the boy who turned in mute horror to face the rider. The young traveler knew, it was an assault for taking his life. When the snorting horse was just two steps away, the boy threw up his hands and broke into a run, but instantly fell and rolled on the ground, struck down by the rider’s iron hand. He screamed, expecting the hoofs to crush him, but the mighty steed leaped over his body without touching, probably unwilling to trample the man. Instantly stopping the animal, the rider jumped off onto the ground and again with a single strike brought the runner, who was about to rise to feet, back to the ground. “Lie still,” his said in a chilly voice. The boy looked into his eyes and saw that they were cold like ice. He recognized his chaser. It was that same man who so scared him near the hotel. By the light of the stars he could well see his tall figure and a hard, like cut from stone, face, merciless like that of Fate herself. It could not be an ordinary robber… But then, what booty can a poor sailor be? “This is the priest, the priest of the temple,” the boy realized. “He’s got me!” All these thoughts crossed his mind within seconds as he lay prostrate on the ground squeezed to it by a foot in a soft leather boot resting on his chest. Fear gripped him harder than the sudden and brutal violence. The priest produced a dagger from the scabbard. “Take punishment for stealing the Rain Stone and destroying the life of people associated with it!” He raised the hand for a strike. The captive clutched his leg with both hands, trying to remove it from the chest. “No! I’m just a sailor headed for the ship. Leave me alone! I’m not who you’re looking for!” his scream was so weak it wouldn’t wake up anybody from the people sleeping quite near in the lanes. The priest raised his eyebrows and then, resolving on something, replaced the dagger into the scabbard, still holding firm the luckless fugitive. “He’s poor like a church mouse, not wearing even shoes. So, he couldn’t have sold the Rain Stone! Let him tell first where the Stone is! Then, just let him try to lie!” The priest hurled the captive face down on the ground and tied his hands behind his back with a rope he took from the belt. Then he raised the boy’s body, put it down on the back of the black horse so easily as if it didn’t weigh at all, and tied his feet to the stirrups with ropes. Exhausted, the thief could offer no resistance. “Now you will tell nothing but the truth! Your fate is at stake this moment!” taking the horse by the bridle, the priest made for a large dry tree standing in the middle of the wasteland. At one time it was a great oak. Now the tree seemed to scowl with its naked sharp boughs menacingly sticking out in all directions. The priest tied the horse to a thick dry branch and stood up before it staring at the man in the saddle. “Tell me, why did you steal the Rain Stone? Don’t you know that it’s a terrible crime?!” The culprit raised his frightened eyes to him, muttered with difficulty: “I wasn’t going to steal the Stone, Your Excellency! I got to the temple gallery because I wanted…” “But you did steal the Stone! Where is it? After all, you couldn’t make use of its power!” “I only wanted to have a better look at a fine priestess and, perhaps, to talk to her,” said the captive in a quivering voice. “But when I saw her wake up, I got scared she would call the guards and that would be the end of me. At that moment I was already holding the Stone which I had taken out of the amphora from mere curiosity, just for looking at it…” (The priest groaned). “What happened next, you fool?” “Have mercy on me, Your Excellency! I had no time to put the Stone back to its place. I had to leap over the parapet and hide myself in the grove. The chase couldn’t find me, so I escaped. But I knew I would be found out and punished for this…” “Where is the Stone now?” the priest’s face was inscrutable. The captive jerked in the saddle, making as if he would fly off, and answered very softly: “It is no more, great priest. I don’t know where it is. I swear by Zeus!” there was unfathomable despair in his eyes. “Should I stab him now or will it all be to no avail?” the priest’s face went dark. “The stone’s power is way too great,” the boy continued, choking with words. “I felt like I was floating over the waves, full of light… All around me shone and sang… And it seemed to me I heard the gods’ voices… I couldn’t walk anywhere because I didn’t even remember myself…” the captive helplessly watched the priest. The latter stared at him more intently. “Did you feel the Stone’s strength? How did it happen for the first time?” “It happened the moment I first took it. It seemed as if I was holding the sun in my hand for such a heat suddenly entered my chest. I felt remarkably strong and capable of performing any heroics.” The priest sneered. “I see. It’s only that you don’t know that it’s not the Stone as such that matters… Do you think you still have time left for exploits?” the thought of the priestess’s death filled his heart again with anger. “This fool is trying to break loose again… What a fear in his eyes!...” But feeling involuntarily sorry for him, he couldn’t decide on the final blow at the unarmed and weak man. At this moment the horse turned its head to its strange rider and neighed shrilly as if sympathizing with him. The captive burst into sobs, unable to restrain the tears any more. Overcome with despair, he exclaimed: “The Stone turned into light. How could I prevent it? O priest, I committed a sacrilege. But I didn’t mean to! Spare me!” Amazed, the priest kept silence which the boy misconstrued. Tilting his head, he continued to cry softly, trying to utter something. At last, the priest made out his words. “I know that my entreaties mean nothing to you, your Excellency…” Suddenly, the anger went of the priest’s heart. Zaron felt sorry for somebody who was so helpless in his hands and his cruelty became disgusting to him. “The priestess was right. He is not to blame… Who am I to be his hangman? Only the unknown God knows why this man was given life. Maybe, everything that happened will turn out well in the end? He’s a child after all, he’s just started his life.” “Why didn’t you tell me everything from the first?” he asked in a much quieter tone. The boy raised his head in surprise: “Would your Excellency believe me? Would you take my words for the truth if they seem to be a fairy tale even to me? It was a miracle and when I recall this, I find it hard to believe myself…” he spoke fast, fearing to fall silent and trying to delay death. His voice broke and eyes showed dread. The priest grinned almost imperceptibly, but there was no more bitterness in that grin. He silently drew the dagger from the scabbard, came close to the captive (who jerked in the saddle and trembled all over) and cut the ropes on his ankles. Then he removed him from the horse in a single powerful movement, set him in front of himself and freed his hands. The captive staggered, nearly fell. Then he swallowed spasmodically, trying to say something, but no words came from his mouth. “What you told me is indeed a miracle,” said the priest. “And that it happened to you is very telling, too. Have no fear,” he said, but the captive seemed not to hear him very well. The priest uttered as softly as he could: “Have no fear. I won’t harm you. I was wrong subjecting you to such a severe trying. What’s your name?” “Valensian,” the boy looked up at him and his pale face showed a shadow of a smile. “You may come with me, Valensian, for studies at the temple.” “Let me go, your Excellency, uttered Valensian softly. “I want to return to the ship.” The priest scrutinized him: “He must be free…” “Go. Come back to the ship. You’re free, traveler.” “And what about the Stone?” said Valensian almost inaudibly. “The Stone went its own way in this world. But people’s ways are much more important. Important is what you choose yourself. You know where the temple is. If you wish to return, I’ll always wait for you, Valensian. I am the chief priest of the temple.” The boy’s face cleared, a smile flickered across it again. “Do the Initiated have names?” The priest carefully touched him on the shoulder. “You are very curious. Do you know that? My name is Zaron.” “Thank you, Zaron,” at last Valensian smiled openly and color began to return to his cheeks. “Go. You’re free,” the priest raised his palm in a gesture of benediction. For a moment the boy bent his head, then turned and briskly walked away. At the edge of the wasteland he looked back to see that his chaser was standing immobile with his horse resembling a black rock. “God reward you!” the priest heard before the boy disappeared in the gathering dusk. * * * Two months later, a citizen of Ephesus going about his business across the wasteland, noticed to his surprise that a young sprout cropped up around the old oak. The wasteland, always grim and dull, looked now somewhat newer… A strong and slender oakling was shooting out from the thick sprouts around the oak roots. A month later the old oak tree had been cut down for firewood. But the young small oakling remained on the wasteland to rock in the wind.

Quitting the temple: destiny fulfilled The priest waited for the adventurer in vain. He had died a few months after returning to the temple. Nobody knew the cause of his death. True, the temple service did not gladden him any more. The priest was sad. One morning he was found lying, as if asleep, on the roof of the temple next to an empty amphora. Not long before this the priest had a dream… … Several armed warriors pressed him, trying to push into a narrow dark cave. But he resisted the enemies who were closing the cave entrance with a rock. Gradually they were overcoming him. Suddenly somebody’s hand on the outside slid into the crack and the rock shifted away a little. Zaron made a last effort and, violently rushing out, assailed his opponents. They charged at him again, but at this moment a golden flame, dazzling like lightening, burst out of his chest, instantly incinerating them all without a trace. And that’s when young trees, grass, and flowers sprouted at once between the stones of the big court where Zaron found himself. In the distance he discerned an outline of a stranger in a light-colored dress… * * * The boy, spared by the priest, continued to enjoy the granted life for a further two years. But one day his ship in the Aegean Sea got into a storm which swallowed him up along with other sailors. This is how the destinies of the senior priest Zaron and the young tramp Valensian ended in the mysterious Hellas during the era of Alexander the Great when wonders easily became reality and gods and goddesses did not leave ordinary travelers neglected and unattended to, if those caught their fancy. So those who longed for it acquired unheard of revelations and entered the world of freedom from a circle delineated by fate. To these restless adventure seekers Providence brought its most wondrous and superb gifts. How can the soul change its course? The universe revolves in mystery profound. The thread of meeting like a magic force Will link all times before we leave the ground. (The translator’s version) ………………………………………………………………………………………………………… If possible for the soul to change its way, The mysterious Universe won’t say. Before the meeting will again take place, A lot of times will pass and hide their face. (This is my own translation)

In search of the Key: a golden thread (Interlude, part II) … Zahr remembered that Gertanium had again checked his knowledge of Arabic which took a whole hour. After that the Chief Priest ordered nut sherbet, cheese and two bowls of wine with rose petals floating on it, to be brought into the room. “We’ve done a good job. You will leave the temple soon. Let’s have a rest.” They got down to their meal. The wine was superb and Zahr’s head swam slightly from its exquisite bouquet. But there was a faint trace of bitterness in it… Gertanium was saying something, but Zahr heard him indistinctly. Suddenly he realized that he was lying on the floor though he didn’t remember falling down. Probably, somebody’s hands took him up and put face up on the cold stone slabs… Pleasingly sweet visions floated before his eyes: roses, Ayreine and what he could not clearly visualize drifted smoothly in the air… Then he heard Gertanium’s voice, crisp and clear: “Are you sure you can tell an illusion from reality?” But the voice died away in his mind like an echo and he lapsed back into sleep, not registering the moment it happened… * * * We play games with each other And enjoy the run around, But heavens are calling for us to ascend: The circle has come to an end, a thunderstorm begins to sparkle! … As Zahr woke up, he realized that he was lying in a cave with a lit lamp by his side. Zahr noticed that the flame was smooth and even, which meant that it was far from the exit. Through the travel jacket he felt the icy chill of the floor… But he had entered Gertanium’s place wearing nothing but a tunic… For a moment he was at a loss, but then his thoughts arranged themselves in a regular pattern and a memory of the previous events came fully back to him. “So that’s how Gertanium sent me on the voyage!... He had put soporific herbs into my wine and, when I fell asleep, they brought me over here.” He shivered involuntarily and rose hurriedly. His conscientiousness was now fully clear. It was the Labyrinth he had heard about from his teacher but never been in before… He walked along the wall all round the cave, but discovered only one exit from it hidden behind a stone ledge and steeply going down into pitch darkness. It was absolutely unclear how he had ended up here. The flame of the lamp still remained immobile and did not swing aside which might indicate at least one exit to the light. But Zahr had no time to ponder about those mysteries. They could only be solved through Gertanium no traces of whom were here. What Zahr was in for was obvious and indisputable – he had to make a hard and mysterious trip into the depth of the Labyrinth. The light illuminated only the very beginning of a dark descent… “All this is fully in spirit of my teacher calling for less talk and more doings. Thus far one thing is clear: he wasn’t going to starve me to death if he left the lamp for me. And the jacket, too…” There was no point at all in standing and waiting till the lamp would go out. Zahr moved forward, that is downward, in the only accessible direction. He hoped he would soon come upon an exit upward… * * * Darkness heals the wounds. Calms down under its cover Pain of the soul exhausted with grief, Loneliness and denial. Darkness brings clarity of the Word, Awakened by its silence. Light of the day returns hope, Pleasure of a song, morning work, Gives to a heart pleasure of understanding And shine of solar knowledge. But don't you take the Dark for the darkness, The Dark isn’t a gift for the person, As it bears with itself enslavement, Soul dream of ignorance and hatred, Eternal wandering in the Labyrinth. Darkness and Light are the two in the world That are appointed for prosperity Of the best qualities in the person, Enlightenment and creation. When Zahr was half way the stone passage, giving himself light by the lantern and holding with his hand on to the rugged wall (for the passage was rather steep), he remembered about the golden thread, Ayreine’s present. He produced the invaluable ball he had kept on his bosom. Those who had put him to sleep and brought here could never find the hidden treasure. For all their shrewdness, neither Pavsanium nor Diomed could guess what it was. “This will help you not to lose way, my love.Take care of it!” came to his mind the gentle voice of his sweetheart and his heart filled with warmth. Zahr smiled. “I only wish we were together! I must win and get out of here, at least for being together with her, for protecting her against all unfairness of the world. I love you… Do you already know that I am in the Labyrinth?” “Zahr!...” her gentle call reached him. He shuddered and almost fell from surprise, stumbling over a stone sticking out of the floor. Standing before him was Ayreine in an amazing dress, strewn with gems splashing golden and emerald spots on the walls of the passage. And that was just a few steps away! Choking with air from excitement, Zahr stepped toward her, stretching out his hands for an embrace. But she took a few steps back, calling him by his name again. Her voice in the darkness of the passage sounded cold and shrill. It was dark because Zahr had dropped both the ball and the lamp which instantly went out from the impact. Only the girl’s dress continued to shimmer, issuing a queer flickering light. She stood still, only beckoning to Zahr to approach her. Suddenly, a fear gripped him. His head reeled and all the body was consumed by the fire of the shock. This could not be Ayreine! Ayreine had never worn such dresses; she just didn’t have any such attire! All her tunics, even the most exquisite ones, were remarkably simple and only infrequently were embroidered with golden and silvery threads… The ghost was still standing as if awaiting something, awaiting now in vain. This instant, the golden ball that lay in a depression in the floor flared up. Zahr snatched it up, rose and took a step towards the hazy apparition. The vision of the sweetheart sighed and … faded away, splashing the boy with a wave of cold. That is when he spotted the lamp on the floor and picked it up instantly. Fortunately, the oil didn’t pour out as the lamp mouth was too narrow for this. The young Irishman produced the fire striker and the tinder, struck a spark and relit the lamp. Coming to where the ghost stood, he saw a black yawning abyss. His real way went on after a narrow stone path round the corner. If he, in an upsurge of feeling, would rashly succumb to the illusion, he would tumble into the deadly hole. His stumble saved him… Zahr moved on, bypassing the precipice by the edge, and testing each stone with his foot. He suddenly stopped and stood still for a minute as he heard a soft divine voice breaking forth within him: “This is not the last battle…” Sometimes this voice sounded in Zahr’s mind, supporting and encouraging him in the hardest of times. “Forces of the inferior nature do not wish me to go beyond the illusions…” Now he knew that the Labyrinth wanted to destroy him and was resolved not to gratify the avid desires of Darkness. * * * … The deeper Zahr went, the chillier it became. The cold congealing around him told him that he had descended to a new and deeper level of the Labyrinth – so once again he mentally thanked Gertanium for the jacket. The passage ahead of him criss-crossed and branched in the uneven lighting, and he knew that if he continued on without marking his path, he would be in danger of getting lost and never finding his way back up. It came time to resort to Ayreine’s gift. Zahr fastened the end of a fine golden thread to a sharp stone ledge, wondering again at the thread’s capability to emit its own light regardless of that from the lamp. It was a real magic… “Oh my darling bride. I have never doubted your ability to do so much, but never imagined it could be that much!” Thinking so he went on, unwinding the golden thread and gradually, through the Labyrinth passages, approaching his heart. For several minutes it seemed to him there would be no more obstacles. This thought gave him joy. Suddenly something changed abruptly around him. A wave of cold air struck him from behind. The cold was so piercing it could freeze a living heart. Zahr looked back. To his surprise he saw that the passage behind him got closed by a wall of darkness, so dense that light did not come through it. Raising the lamp, he assured himself of this. Like a thunder cloud, the dark menacing wall was impervious to the rays, permitting no sight of the stone path by which he has just arrived. The icy darkness was silent, fully cutting off his retreat – despite the attempts to approach it and investigate at a closer range he could not do this since at a distance of three steps it forcefully pushed him back like a spring, so he recoiled to where he was. It was as if he was striking his chest against a real rock. He did not know what material the wall was made of. He only noticed that the golden thread did pass through it and illuminated deep inside it, though the illumination quickly disappeared at depth. Zahr squeezed the precious ball in his hand. The other end of the thread was his. But it looked like he was wasting his time, fighting the wall behind his back. While he was at it, another wall of Darkness, just as menacing, rose up in front of him a mere five steps away. It emitted the same piercing cold and, for all his endurance, Zahr shivered from pain it caused him. This wall was ominously immobile and just like the first one, resembling a black door to some abysmal dimension from where there’s no return. It was the inevitable ruin. The young Irishman understood that another half hour here would freeze him to death. He had only nine steps of free space left… And death, most likely, would come sooner for the air in this space began to dwindle. With a shout Zahr rushed forward at the second wall and fell again as if struck and thrown back by a ruthless crushing blow. At this instant it flickered in his mind “Is this the new battle?!” But no human force would cope with this new opponent… And then again a fire flared up in his mind, seized almost fully by Darkness: “I am a man, a maker, and I am at one with the great Creator!” Holding out his hand with the lamp toward the Wall in front of him, he exclaimed as loud as he could: “If you are not from the Almighty – get lost!” At that moment the wall made a noise - as if a real stone wall collapsed in the distance – and fell through the floor like a ghost plunging into the Underworld, but without taking with itself a single stone or grain of dust. Zahr recovered his breath and looked back without moving: the second wall disappeared silently as if it were only a reflection of the first. They both were ghosts from the very start. Zahr went on, without looking back. * * * … The golden ball of threads unwound itself almost completely. Zahr was tired, but his heart thumped with victory. In front of him, in the very centre of the Labyrinth, something awaited him… “And then, when I return with flying colors, Ayreine… Gertanium won’t dare to refuse your hand to me!” But what awaits him? What will the Initiation be like? He didn’t know… He walked still on for some time, thinking about his sweetheart… The passage gradually began to rise and expand, so Zahr quickened his pace. Suddenly he stopped short and even recoiled, covering his face with the hand as a wall of dazzling blue light emerged in front of him! It happened so unexpectedly that the human eyes could not perceive the moment it appeared… Zahr stood motionless and peered at it. The wall was not of a single matter. Vertical blue threads of all shades of blueness burned in it. It was an exceptionally beautiful sight, and it was a flame he had now to go through. But how? One thing only was obvious to Zahr – he would not give up and retreat. The wall produced an almost inaudible din and crackling, like that of a ball lightening. “So help me God!” uttered the young Irishman and, closing his eyes, stepped forward into the wall of blue fire. The wall disappeared and a wave of cold scorched him. He found himself in a huge cave. He shut his eyes to the blinding luster. The cave was lit by thousands of candles. He later discovered that actually there were far fewer of them – the candles were brightly reflected in the mirrors that covered the cave walls to a man’s height and even the ceiling. When the flickering of light and luster ceased in his eyes, he looked around himself to see that the candles had been placed not chaotically at all. They created five shining broad paths leading to a low smooth elevation of white alabaster*, arranged strictly in the middle of this sacred space. Behind the elevation, some little distance off was a white alabaster column with a flat top, whose height would hardly reach an adult’s breast. Zahr had not the slightest idea what that column was, but the elevation with four supports in the corners had been designed, most likely, for meditations. Zahr headed towards it, taking one of the ray paths leading to the centre from the entrance. The heart of the Labyrinth was full of harmony, like a heart of a rational live being. Zahr couldn’t help admiring its beauty. He had forgotten that in the darkness of its existence the Labyrinth tried to destroy him... “Don’t blow out any candle!” he heard a low Voice within his conscientiousness. It was again a divine warning. He walked on more carefully. A minute later he reached the Labyrinth centre. “Initiation is in the heart!” he heard. Zahr settled himself on the alabaster seat, crossed his legs in an Oriental fashion, put his hands palms up on his knees and closed his eyes. Meditation was well familiar to him from the training in the Orient. But previously his visions and inspirations, those of a brave warrior and a man prone to analysis, were brief. What will the meditation bring him here? Gradually his thoughts calmed down and finally a living silence established itself within him, suggestive of a pending entry into other spaces of heart and soul that exist by themselves. It is, essentially, an overcoming of borders between a man and the finest threads of the world inseparable from a man as his continuation and as a bridge linking him with the Deity…. Silence became exceedingly tense and then filled with the clearest tones of singing strings. … At first, the divine sound Aauhm rang for a long time. It was like a soft and deep ring of a bell, a sound to which the Universe had been created and thanks to which it lives on without dissolving in space. A huge space of celestial spheres, smoothly rotating and issuing space music, opened up before Zahr’s closed eyes. The movement of the spheres – worlds and galaxies – was in tune with the great space rhythm. After this, the angels’ choruses penetrated through the music of spheres and broke into a song glorifying the beauty of Life. And all this interlaced with a miraculous harmony unceasingly creating the new… All the music of Space passed through his heart, filling it with endless love… Then the stars poured down through him, all his body vibrated, and some space suddenly opened in his heart from which the Words of Creation gushed forth, which, it turned out, had always resided within him as a continuation of the Divine Word. This Word, which now rang in Zahr’s heart, could create new worlds on Earth. This word could touch a blade of grass, or a galaxy, or stars, thus giving knowledge of their secret essence. The Word of Divine Love could transform the world for oneself and for others… As the Voice of Creation sounded, Zahr saw with his mind’s eye a beautiful light-blue castle among the hills. That castle had been created pursuant to commandment of the Divine Word embodied in Man as his Son… He recognized the place where the castle stood and still had to acquire a name. Now he knew his way… The divine voices gradually fell silent, sinking into the depth of his heart. All his being filled with a promise of future accomplishments. It was time to return to the world of people, that is his world. * * * When Zahr got up, a deep silence still reigned supreme in the cave. He looked around to see that it was not so light as before since part of the candles had burned down almost completely. It meant that his meditation had lasted at least an hour… He suddenly spotted a flickering spark on the column behind himself and approached it to take a better look and gratify his curiosity. He could hardly believe his eyes: on the top of the column, right at the level of his breast, lay a glistening silver ring! How could it possibly end up here given that its appearance would have disturbed his meditation and he wouldn’t fail to notice this!.. He took the ring from the elevation and started to examine it. Its edge was patterned and its turquoise seemed to have taken in the purity of the spring sky. But it was, indisputably, a man’s ring. Zahr, who had never worn rings, now felt somehow that the ring did not belong to him. He didn’t try to put it on. Having admired it for another minute he hid it on his bosom and made for the cave exit. Reaching its threshold, he looked back to see for the last time its miraculous beauty. Folding his arms in a holy praying gesture he said in a clear and strong voice into the yawning space: “Thank you for everything!” Once he uttered this, all the candles in the cave flared up brightly as if soaring up to the sky, and then went out all at once as if blown out by Aeolus’s ** great breath. The cave sank into the darkness. Now only the lamp at Zahr’s belt flickeringly illuminated the stone path before him. He had to go forward. Here, in the Meditation Cave, in the middle of the Labyrinth his initiation took place, the last in this temple. Life itself will give him other initiations, both great and small. Zahr started on the journey. The golden thread that had brought him here shone quite near. Fastened by him to the wall, it was willing, just as faithfully, to lead him upward. At this moment the boy felt acutely, as never before, that he was missing people and desired to see them again. Out of this stone bag, quick! Whatever miracles it had hidden, now Zahr was carrying them away in his heart… * * * Zahr went on, gradually winding up the thread of the ball. At some point he discovered that the tread had ended. But the deepest levels of the Labyrinth had already been negotiated. He was sure that he would not lose his way further on – here he would make the best use of his fine memory and sense of direction. Besides, the inclination of the passages themselves, gradually leading upward, would help him. “Ayreine told me that the Labyrinth is lethally dangerous. I suppose she greatly exaggerates, the way girls to do it. Yes, the Labyrinth is mysterious, indisputably surprising and … just as dangerous…I doubt this. But even if this is the case, a brave fellow will cope with any danger.” Once he thought so, rather self-confidently, the entire Labyrinth shuddered from a deep earth shock that brought dreadful sounds as if a crazy musician furiously struck the keys of a huge organ in an attempt to quell his anguish and despair… Yes, it was an earthquake! Big stone slabs were falling from the ceiling, threatening to bury Zahr in a dead end… He rushed to the left to a side passage leading nobody knew where. There was no other way out. Behind him rumbled the rock-fall. But that was not the worst since Zahr was alive. The new passage branched out in different directions and the air movement showed that it was still possible to go up. Zahr dashed further on, trying to move as soon as he could, but the Labyrinth seemed to have gone mad. Triggered underground, now the earthquake spread in waves upward. The stone floor and the walls of the passage rocked and trembled making it absolutely impossible to remain on feet. So Zahr had to crawl, clinging to the walls and gasping in exhaustion. He felt himself deadly alone and abandoned among the merciless all-crushing grindstones of the earth’s abyss… And only one name kept up his stamina, giving him force not to succumb to this dreadful onslaught: “Ayreine… Ayreine, darling,” he whispered and, losing consciousness, he kept crawling upward… Blood trickled from under his nails… The earthquake lasted ages, it seemed, though by normal human count it carried on for hardly more than a quarter of an hour… But if necessary, a quarter of an hour is enough for destroying the entire world. And, by the look of things, that is what the Labyrinth intended to do, simultaneously wiping one human off the face of the world… Zahr’s strength had run out almost completely when the earthquake suddenly ceased as if the Labyrinth decided that after such a pandemonium nobody could remain alive. The hard bones of Mother Earth at last stopped to shiver and, following the final rumbles of the underground boom, a very deep silence set in... * * * It seemed that centuries had passed before Zahr came to himself in a huge cave with icy immobile air in pitch darkness. He knew it was a cave and that it was a great one because before losing consciousness and the memory of surroundings, with his flint he had set fire to the tinder and caught the glimpses of huge vaulted walls. It was not the cave he had been brought into when they picked him up, sleeping at the entrance to the Labyrinth. It looked like this cave had no exit either… Or it seemed to him so because he had frozen and lost strength as he lay in consternation. He was still lying prostrate… He desperately needed a glimmer of light, a ray of the sun… Making a strenuous effort, he rose to the knees with a groan. Groping himself and finding nothing on his belt, he realized that he had lost the lamp in the Labyrinth. However, the flint and tinder were still with him and, if only he thought about that, he could have ripped his belt and shirt to strips and, setting fire to the cloth, might try to find his way to salvation. But, unfortunately, he was too exhausted by the struggle for life to think of any such stratagem. Now he felt the gnawing hunger. A piece of bread or a gulp of water would help him better than anything. With a great difficulty, clinging to the wall, Zahr did rise to his feet and walked along the wall of the cave, sensing pain in every part of his body injured by the numerous falls. He was walking toward the sound of an underground brook murmuring somewhere near. The proximity of water made him suffer from thirst still more. He pushed himself from the wall and took a few steps toward the cave centre, but his mind dimmed, and he fell, stumbling over the first ledge or stone on his way. He exclaimed from pain as he landed on the floor of the cave. The pain was so sharp he lost consciousness for a minute or so. He came to in a very queer state of mind and body. The vaults, it seemed, squeezed him and he had no strength to rise up. The air could hardly enter his injured lungs. And though the brook was just a few steps away, his body seemed to be utterly devoid of any strength for reaching it. Suddenly the darkness closed down upon him again… * Natural alabaster is a stone similar to marble. Mined in those times in Egypt, Syria and Persia. ** Aeolus - ancient Greeks’ god of wind.

The Voice of Love and exit to Light (Interlude, part III) You are daylight for my soul. You have taken my heart prisoner, Leaning tenderly over me And granting me the warmth of love from your heart.* (*This is my own translation of the poem) Maybe Zahr could have remained in that cave forever… … Suddenly, somebody raised his head and a chill touched his lips. It was water and honey that filled his body with sweetness. His conscientiousness cleared and Zahr realized that he was still lying on the stone floor of the cave, bound by lethal cold and gripped by the hopelessness of the darkness. He rose up on his elbow, staring into the darkness and feeling by his side the living warmth of the stranger who came to his rescue. In a few instants a tender small hand touched his cheek and began to stroke it. He recognized Ayreine. “Darling!” he said in a husky voice. She cried out like a bird and hugged him, pressing herself against his body. Zahr held her tight, trying to calm her shivering. He had never before been so close to her… They lay on the floor of the cave for a few minutes, whispering words of love to each other and exchanging increasingly hot and passionate kisses. They felt warmth and life return to them… A lamp the girl had brought was flickering not far away. Now that Zahr had come to and his eyesight was clear he could see how large the cave was. The lamp cast a sheen up the tall shafts and illuminated the swift chill underground brook that Zahr failed to reach earlier… He sat down on the stone floor and, drawing the girl again to his chest, kissed her hair. “You’re wounded! Your cheek bleeds!” exclaimed Ayreine tearfully again. “Nothing serious, darling. They licked me just a bit, but this too shall pass.” She broke into a laugh that sounded like sobbing and, without saying another word, started to wash his wounds with a piece of clean cloth soaked in water of the brook. Some more time elapsed. Zahr was silent, keeping his eyes shut and surrendering himself to the tender loving touches. It seemed to him that he could sit so for ages. The girl wiped the blood off his cheek and neck and kissed him again. “Let’s go to the light, my dear.” Zahr rose up, lightly leaning on her fragile shoulder. “The exit is quite near. You’ve nearly made it,” said Ayreine. Zahr felt the heat of life run through his veins again. “Ayreine! My love! I’ve been initiated! I’ve won! Ayreine, you’re the light of my life!” he took her up in his arms and conveyed over the brook. “Ayreine, I know now the Creating Word!” They stood without taking their eyes off each other. “You’ve saved me, darling. I don’t know how to thank you enough. All I want in the world is to give my life to you. Will you accept it?” “I will,” answered Ayreine softly and her face lit up. “From nobody but you would I accept such a gift!” They hugged, pressing themselves to each other and only the flame beheld their embracing. “I shall carry you to the very exit from the cave!” Zahr took up Ayreine in his arms again. “I could carry you so to the end of the world!” “Does the world have the end?” asked the girl coyly, looking into his eyes with those enchanting eyes of hers, hazel and with glints of gold at the bottom. Zahr gave a smile: “I don’t know. Never been there…” * * * At last, the lovers reached the light. Zahr wondered that they were just a few arrow’s flights away from Gertanium’s house. So that’s where the exit from the Labyrinth was, quite near the teacher’s house! Zahr sat down on the stone at the entrance, closed his eyes for a minute, and offered his face to the sun rays flowing from free space. So he sat a few minutes in silence with Ayreine by his side. “How did you find me, my love?” “I knew the golden thread would lead you out to the top and that you are brave and smart not to succumb to the traps of the Labyrinth. I heard your soul call for me… I entered the Labyrinth without father’s knowledge…” “You went in though you knew it was struck by an earthquake? You surely felt it up here, on the surface?” “I did but weakly. The earthquake started deep underground. Actually, it was you who started it…” “What?!” “I tell you what.” Zahr fell again victim to her golden captivating eyes. “Your soul is very strong,” Ayreine continued, touching his tangled dark curls. “Not only your word, but even thought may be of tremendous consequence in our world… Once you entered the Labyrinth, you roused him from an eternal sleep. You unwillingly disturbed in the sleepy layers of the Labyrinth’s strength and shifted them… That’s how this disaster began that might cost you your life, Zahr,” the girl trembled again. “I’m here with you!” Zahr pressed her to himself harder. “You know, Ayreine, I’ve brought one gift from the Labyrinth, which, I imagine, is destined for you.” He drew out a ring from the bosom of his torn jacket. Silver and turquoise, pure as a spring sky, sparkled by the light of day. “No, Zahr, this ring is not mine,” said Ayreine softly, holding it for a while on her palm. “The future will solve this riddle. But try to visualize the one who may possess this ring in the future… This is the Ring of Love. Yes, I’ll name it that because turquoise has always been the gem of Love. It will give you the ability to see…” Zahr took the ring and looked at it intently. Suddenly, right before him a living face blazed up so brightly that he started with surprise. It was a face of a youth, gentle and inspired. It emitted bravery and daring and displayed a genuine lust for life. The eyes, somewhat oblong in the Oriental pattern, were unusually almond-shaped, concealing an almost imperceptible smile. The same smile touched the stranger’s lips. The entire face seemed to exude light. The thick soft hair was falling on the stranger’s shoulders, waving in the gentle breeze. Somehow it seemed to Zahr that it was the sea breeze, not the wind on an empty plain or in the hills. On a sudden, a sea wave surged up in his mind’s eye, scattered into white froth and… the stranger’s face vanished. But before the apparition faded away into a stream of blurred images, Zahr spotted for a moment a sandy road and an old weather-beaten road sign that read in French: «Vers le nord!» (“To the North”). For all Zahr knew, in the North of France there were many roadside villages and small towns. And from the port of the big French city Havre, or near it, the ship could easily sail for Great Britain or Ireland. “What did you see, Zahr?” enquired Ayreine once he opened his eyes. “I imagine I’ve seen the one you told me about… Time will show,” Zahr embraced her again . “What should I do to make you happy?” “Just say again you love me!” “I love you. Love you madly…” “Zahr, my dear. You’ve got a ship. It’s a gift of the temple and my father!” “What? A ship?” “Yes. What will you name her?” Smiling, Zahr looked to the sky: “I’ll name her The Star Way.” * * * Deiris was striding from the Labyrinth entrance towards the lovers walking over the grass of the meadow, withered by heat, to Gertanium’s house. The Dane’s green eyes emitted a strange glow. Coming closer, he took Zahr by the shoulder and shook him lightly. No explanations were necessary since the Dane looked just as staggered and enchanted as Zahr himself when he went out of the yawning cave in the middle of the Labyrinth. Zahr realized that at the same time with him, Deiris too was undergoing his Initiation. “Did you hear all that, Dey?” he asked softly. “I did, Zahr! I did see and hear all that! Now I know how to use the Word for creation because I heard the Cosmic Song!” the Dane took a chestful of air, looking at Zahr and through him at the same time. “O Thor!* I thought I’d turn into music myself and would never return!”** “We’ve got a ship, Dey. It’s a gift of the temple.” “O, Thor!” exclaimed Deiris again, inspired as never before. “Where shall we sail?” “To Ireland, Dey! I must build a castle there…” “We must!” “Yes, Dey. We together. That will be the castle of the Light… I thank you, my friend.” “What for, knight?” Zahr smiled: “Just for your being.” * * * Gertanium was hurriedly walking in big steps towards the three. From afar, his face, tanned to bronze, seemed impassive, but Zahr had read genuine excitement in his teacher’s eyes. Gertanium gripped him by the shoulders: “Thank God you’re alive. If I knew you’d be crushing the underground,” he gave a short laugh. “This is the first time it’s happened in the last thousand years. Forgive me, I didn’t forecast this, and I could not, actually… But as long as the temple existed – do you hear me – nobody perished in the Labyrinth for the goal of this Initiation was quite different, that is to bring life, not death,” he drew Ayreine to himself. “Children seldom obey their fathers…” He gazed at Zahr again. “God knows, I didn’t wish to give her away to you. Ireland is way too far… But now,” he smiled sadly, “I see what I see. And I won’t be in your way.” He joined the young couple’s hands. “Who am I to oppose Love?...” * * * That summer evening, Zahr and Ayreine were wedded according to the ancient Greek rite. The young couple were crowned with wreaths of purple roses and mirth and led off to the wedding bed. Zahr and his newlywed wife stayed another three days in the temple, enjoying their bliss and happiness, before it came time for them to depart. Zahr’s squad, forty odd brave warriors, united by combat fraternity, were ready for a hard journey Awaiting them at the berth was a white-winged ship, “Star Way”. The sea was calling Zahr to his native land… *Thor – one of the senior gods of the Scandinavian pagan pantheon, the Thunderer armed with a powerful hammer (mjolnir), a counterpart of the Slavs’ Perun. ** The Initiation ceremony depends on the personality of the teacher and his disciple. Pavsanium, the teacher of Deiris, was a somewhat softer person than Gertanium. Deiris’s Initiation was very different from Zahr’s. In it, Pavsanium led him into a fine white column hall hidden not far from the entrance to the Labyrinth. It had a clear ceiling through which the sunshine was flowing. Deiris meditated there for several hours, until the desired Truth revealed itself to him, following which he returned to the temple. The Dane did not feel the earthquake for it had not reached that part of the Labyrinth where he was. Nor did he have horrifying visions. But due to a more passionate and selfish nature of Zahr and a formidable mission he faced, his Initiation was bound to be a really cruel and trying experience, no matter how hard Gertanium tried to ease it. For all that, Zahr acquired in this experience the true Light and overcame the fiercest of temptations lurking at the bottom of his mind. That he obtained Love and Creating Word was a well deserved reward which nobody could ever on earth wrest from his soul.

The magic fortress (Excerpt from a chapter) Strength and unkindness, they are very strong: A claw in bird’s body will break off its song. But spiting all worries, all winds and storms’ roar You come once again to the coveted door. \ Autumn is here, the sunshine glints bright, The grass underfoot inspires delight. Leaves fall from above on the mirror of pool, Of charm and attraction they are so full. You face your sweet home… What awaits it is dark. Be prepared to roam And your heart throbbing hark. “Hey, fellow! Get up! Your master needs you!” Nellit had scarcely opened his eyes when somebody grabbed him by the shoulder and put him on his feet. Towering over him was a huge armed warrior wearing a helmet and a coat of mail. He was, sure enough, one of the mercenaries from that camp on the wasteland. His sinister aspect could terrify an older and more weather-beaten man than our new-sprung traveler. Nellit attempted to rush aside in terror, but he was held by an iron-like grip which then shook him up violently by way of demonstration where the strength was. “What do you want from me?!” the boy exclaimed in horror. For a reply his hands were wrung behind his back and he was dragged to the way out of the wood. “Let’s go! You’ll learn soon enough!” the man who was dragging him was obviously disinclined to wrangle and waste his time. “Leave me alone! I won’t go anywhere! Help!” Nellit wriggled frenziedly, resisting with all his might and main, kicking out and turning each step into a fighting bout, but all was in vain. The mercenary drew him unswervingly towards the camp, swearing blue murder. “Damn you! Shut your trap or I’ll do it for you! Why, of all the people, they sent me to deal with that clown? Ill luck is mine as usual!...” But then, probably pitying the scared captive for an instant, he muttered: “Stop kicking! Nobody’s going to kill you!” That is when they finally found themselves on the edge of the field where a camp reemerged before Nellit’s eyes. It appeared to be a small camp of some forty people or so. The boy noticed nothing except the camp for he was still excited like a caught bird and his heart thumped with fear. Suddenly the mercenary made a cautionary gesture with one hand, producing a fig sign, not forgetting in the meantime to firmly hold Nellit by the scruff of his neck. Thus the boy realized that he, too, was afraid of something. Following his look, he gasped with amazement – on the far end of the wasteland, as if sneering at the common realities, stood and shone a small fortress with loopholes on the upper edge of the wall and a small triangular flag fluttering over the central tower. The flag was white like the stunningly bright rays issuing from the fortress walls. It flooded half the wasteland but didn’t reach the edge of the military camp. Nellit was both frightened and enchanted… He would swear he had never before seen anything like it, except perhaps in fairy tales. He even forgot that he was there against his will. “This cropped up here this morning,” muttered the warrior coming back to reality. “We woke up to it!” “Whose fortress is that?” asked Nellit addressing the question rather to himself since his companion, who continued to drag him, was obviously unwilling to discuss this. Nellit gave up his attempts to free himself. It was useless. Also, he stopped to resist because he was suddenly gripped by an acute sensation of plunging into a mystery… A minute later the tramp of Belfast, with disheveled red curls, was brought over and put in front of the camp commander imposingly reclining on the stump. That was the self-same robber baron we mentioned previously. * * * Seeing the fear in the eyes of the red-headed boy still held by the mercenary, the camp commander smirked: “Have no fear, lad! Nobody will touch you if you meet just one of our … requests.” His words and scowl congealed everything inside Nellit. The warriors of the camp assembled to have a look at him. The guard at last let go of his shoulder. Nellit suddenly got angry, his eyes flashed. Somebody pushed him lightly and a sneering voice was heard: “Look at that! He’s like a wild cat!” “Could he be from their lot?” one of the warriors pointed to the phantom fortress. “Then he will come to terms with them easily!” “I was going my way!” exclaimed Nellit. “What is it you want?” Nobody replied at first. In somebody’s look Nellit caught even something like pity. “Leave him alone!” gruffly sounded at last the commander’s voice. “Come here.” Nellit approached a little. The commander scrutinized him quizzically. “Will you go as a parliamentarian to negotiate with the strangers who seized the fortress?” Nellit looked at the fortress and, at this instant, the illumination issuing from it dimmed. Only the walls continued to shine a little as if a ray of the Moon fell into the mirror. Those were silent and mysterious walls for there was not a single warrior on them. Nevertheless, the sensation was that somebody possessed and commanded the fortress. This both scared and attracted all at one time. “They are on my land,” the robber continued. “Therefore I will turn them out unless they pay me a tribute.” “Can’t they disappear same as they appeared?” asked Nellit, whose fear has dwindled somewhat. “Nobody knows it. My people could only reach the end of the light. After this they felt such a pain they had to turn back. But now the light is out, as you can see. Now we are sure to win. Go there. You are not a warrior, they won’t touch you.” “I won’t go there!” exclaimed Nellit, looking once more at the silent fortress. However, something in it did attract him… “You have no choice.” The commander pointed to two archers, looking intently at Nellit, with arrows fitted to the string. “If you try to run away before reaching the walls, they will pierce you with arrows.” Nellit straightened himself proudly: “I’d rather go to the magic fortress than stay here!” The robber scowled: “Have a good journey then! Make haste before my patience runs out!” Silently the boy turned away and made for the low glimmering walls. He felt he was being watched by scores of people, but never once looked back. The unpredictable and the unknown awaited him…. But then, the fortress’s shine may have been not at all hostile. Suddenly it became so still it seemed to Nellit that his lonely steps rang like a loud echo across the wasteland… * * * As Nellit covered half the wasteland, silent warriors appeared on the walls, tall figures in shining coats of mail and helmets with a metallic nose guard and shields in hands. There were many of them and they took up the entire perimeter of the wall. The boy stopped, but then went on, like in sleep. He could hardly hear the exclamations of amazement coming from the robbers’ camp. Those cries hardly reached his conscientiousness that seemed to be frozen in a strenuous strain. He only saw before himself a number of people, watching him silently, and a wall that was approaching him fast. Once he came close to it, the fortress lit up remarkably brighter, issuing that white light that seemed to invite him to enter. Nellit dimly remembered how the bandits’ commander told him that his people had to turn back from pain, hardly reaching the border of the light. But the boy didn’t feel any pain… With a thumping heart he knocked on the gate with his fist and it seemed to him that his knock went over the wasteland like thunder. At the same moment a man’s contemptuous voice came from the wall. “Open the gate for him!” No sooner had Nellit offered resistance or uttered a word than a gate door swung open and somebody’s strong hands pulled him inside whereupon Nellit heard the bar being slid behind him. When he came to himself, he discovered that a fair-haired, narrow-faced man in a coat of mail was holding him, regarding with a stare of daring blue eyes. The scared Nellit rushed back and very nearly cannoned into a bearded man, looking like a Viking, who stood behind his back. The boy saw that the fortress court was full of people, all gazing at him curiously. He straightened out, feeling a blush of embarrassment rising to his face and bringing tears to his eyes: “I’ve come to you as a parliamentarian!” “Forget it!” the fair-haired warrior shook him by the shoulders, retaining his clasp. “We don’t negotiate with plebs!” “Exactly!” grumbled the bearded man behind his back. “We just cut them to pieces!” “Forget them!” continued the blue-eyed warrior, giving a radiant smile to Nell. “Nellit, my boy, don’t you recognize me? Have no fear! All of us here are your friends!” “And you don’t have to return to that band again!” concluded the Dane. The fair-haired warrior gave a laugh. “Deiris is right as never before!” Looking back, Nellit saw that the Dane also smiled, quite affably and without sneer or threat. Other warriors of the fortress who had encircled Nellit by a ring of curious onlookers, smiled and laughed too. “You are safe here, boy! Don’t be afraid. Nobody will give you away for all the money of the world!” So shouted the people around him. Nellit saw their faces, young and old, all genuinely elated and benevolent. “What a redhead!...” “And what green eyes!” “You are with friends,” said the fair-haired, grey-eyed youth looking very much like the blonde warrior. Surveying the assembly, Nellit smiled self-consciously: “Who are you?” “Where do you think you are?” asked him the blonde warrior with smiling eyes, who indisputably was the chief here. Answer came there none. (To be continued)

Наверх / Up

The call from the mirror and an encounter with the shadow Nellit woke up in the middle of the night. It was quiet in the room, the fresh air was flowing through the slightly ajar shutters. Undoubtedly, all were asleep in the castle, but the boy didn’t feel like sleeping at all. He was alarmed by something. His was a queer sensation that somebody was present in the room though he heard neither movement nor breath. From the head of the bed he could not see most of the room. So, rising slightly, Nellit looked cautiously around and even said into the darkness: “Who’s here?” But there obviously was no place to hide in the room… Streaks of pale moonlight were falling on the floor. By its light Nellit saw on the far wall a large mirror in a silver frame shaped like an arch. That surprised him for he definitely remembered not seeing it when they brought him here. The mirror shone by the moonlight and it was its shine that produced the restless uneasiness and woke the boy. Coming right from the mirror was … a call. It was a silent call, but distinctly perceivable not by hearing but some other sense familiar to Nellit only from rare previous occasions in his life. It was a disturbing call that alarmed and terrified. Also, it was an incredibly attractive appeal, giving him almost no choice about whether to respond to it or not. Nellit felt himself being drawn by somebody eager to talk to him but unable to do so through the agency of words. A mighty force was pushing Nellit toward the mirror. That force seemed to be within him, somewhere in the pit of his stomach, driving him irresistibly to the wall on which the mirror glass was shimmering. Alarmed, Nell sat down on the bed and put his bare feet down on the floor. He suddenly felt terribly apprehensive. “Should I call for help?” flashed through his brain, but he instantly imagined being mocked and changed his mind. The overpowering call was somber and unkind. There was no friendliness in it, only a desire to subjugate him, Nellit, to bend to its will. Nellit’s intuition was telling him so. But the temptation to learn what it actually was prevailed over the obscure sense of danger. As the boy rose slowly, the call instantly became louder… Gripped by curiosity harder than by fear, Nellit slowly moved towards the mirror. Through the dusk he could discern a ghostly figure mysteriously looming behind the mirror glass. He felt as if that figure was drawing him to itself by the silent call, producing an irresistible desire to come close to it. As Nellit was approaching it, the figure’s influence intensified so that the mystic call penetrated him deeper and deeper… Step by step, with bare feet over the stone floor chilling the soles… Getting nearer and nearer… The boy’s green eyes were wide open… He was almost able to make out who was standing there, in the mirror… Suddenly, somebody’s strong hand seized him by the shoulder. Nellit cried out. The blurred figure disappeared from the mirror. Next to Nellit stood Zahr. “What are you here up to, Nell O'Reilly,” he began angrily, but on seeing the boy’s confusion he softened his voice instantly. “You shouldn’t have done it, Nell. Thank God you had no time to come there. Once a man rouses his strength, he often is unable to control it…” “Calm down,” he stroked the boy’s hair. “What was that, sir?!” “That was your condensed duplicate, who is partially yourself and willing to enter you in order to extend its life and, maybe, to overpower you. He only needed that you should approach him as close as possible for looking into your eyes. You could go mad with horror and then the forces of the shadow would have overcome you. Such a look into the duplicate’s eyes is terrible to the uninitiated. And even to the Initiated… True, some of the Initiated ones don’t have duplicates any more since they have defeated the forces of darkness…” “What is that duplicate?!” exclaimed Nell. “This is a dark side, splinters of self-admiration, arrogance and spite blended in one mass and capable of aggression. They have grown into a kind of a snowball as a result of many incarnations. The shadow has consciousness, different from human, since it is capable of absorptions only. We can say it is both real and unreal at the same time. The essence of a real human being is too strong to succumb to the duplicate or the Shadow, so we oust it into the mirror-world of our own consciousness where it hides, biding an opportune moment to assail us. So the battle with the Shadow may be quite fierce. However, he who defeated it in a combat, becomes immune to any further attempts of the darkness to capture his spirit because he becomes one with the Light and hears its orders that make his life free, filling it with joy and delight for him and others.” “What incarnations are you talking about, Sir? I don’t understand… I was born in Belfast…” “I’m talking not only about your current incarnation, but also about many previous ones which, in a sense, are still here, in your soul. Now you had too little time to experience much.” Hugging the boy by the shoulder the knight walked up with him to the window. “Everything will be fine, my son. You are a pupil I’ve been looking forward to for years, since your birth, actually. At long last, Valmi and I have got you…” “Sir,” muttered Nellit in embarrassment, “I’m still wondering if such things happen. Did you know it all right from the start?” “I knew when you were destined to be born and when to come to the Blue Way castle. It was an opportunity and a chance for you… But to materialize it we had to put in a great deal of work… And you too had to be prepared.” “What will happen next, Sir?” asked Nellit in a low voice. “Next? You must fulfill your fate. You are my equal. It’s only that your soul is not roused yet. You still have to engage in a face-to-face combat with the shadow which you will have to win by force of your soul. If you are human, you just can’t do otherwise. But don’t rush the events yet,” he waved his hand and, much to Nellit’s surprise, the mirror on the wall disappeared. “Now sleep quietly, my son.” “And what about the mir…?” “You yourself created that mirror. I only helped you to remove it for a while. You will understand the rest later. Blue Way castle plays such tricks on novices. Too much of light force is concentrated here. So one has to get used to the castle’s magic. As time goes by you’ll learn how to perform wonders you have no idea about at the moment. But you will have to learn for this.” Suddenly Nellit felt he was so tired he could collapse on the floor right there and fall asleep. He did not respond to Zahr’s last words. Looking at him with compassion, he passed the verdict: “You can barely stand. So much for talks, go to bed.” Motioning the boy forward, he led him through the room. Nellit was walking like a somnambulist and fell asleep the moment he was in bed… Zahr passed his hand over him in a gesture of benediction and, taking another quick look at the boy, went out quietly. * * * In the Star Hall sunk in twilight, thoughtfully stood a small figure, like yet another star in the endless circulation of stars and planets. It looked particularly fragile in the environs of high hazy windows and walls soaring up into space like flickering shades. A dark overcoat with a cape made the stranger – who was a woman – and one of the prettiest kind, almost invisible in the foggy haze that enwrapped the castle soon after the sunset. Nocturnal stillness, not disturbed by anything, reigned supreme all around. Not a sound came from the fields, not a whiff of fog from the woods. All seemed to be enchanted as the red-headed boy lay fast asleep, spreading on the bed in a profound sleep… A girl’s slender hand was holding a twig of jasmine. Her lips were slightly parted as she was breathing in the chilly fog flowing through the open window. Her blue eyes sparkled like drops of glistening dew and she was all aflutter with internal excitement as if a sea had suddenly woken up within her, the boundless element conveying the dreams of the mysterious femininity… What had alarmed her was now happening to her for the first time. “Come to me at sunrise, my darling. I’ll be waiting for you. I’ve chosen you and there can be no mistake about it. You are the one whom my heart picked out...” The girl stood by the window for a long time, sunk in her dreams. She saw in her mind the happenings of the previous day. She kept calling up the fine instants and saw Nellit’s smile and the quizzical look of his green eyes sparkling deep inside with strength. The strength, not yet realized by the comer himself… Only magicians have such eyes. Zara, the daughter of the powerful Zahr Rainbow knew it.
